During the press briefing, management of WWF and LWMC informed journalists about the aims and objectives of the partnership. Spellathon is a two decades old campaign run by WWF-P across the country for students of Grade 1-9 in schools, in which they learn about various pressing environmental and conservation issues. The theme of this year's Spellathon is 'solid waste management and energy conservation'.
The campaign then incorporates a test of spelling, and students earn gifts, whereas their involvement in the exciting activity generates donation for WWF's environmental work throughout the country. Speaking at the occasion, Ali Hassan Habib stressed the need for activities, such as Spellathon, in imparting environmental education to a new generation, which is now responsible for taking care of the planet.
He also said what we do in our cities impacts what happens in distant eco-systems at large. "If we change our waste management processes in our cities, untreated waste will not harm the environment and the habitat of other species. The partnership with LWMC is going to further add to the experience, as we will be able to reach out to more students. Spellathon is a key part of WWF-P's yearly activity calendar in which school children are provided books with stories about the environment and good practices for conservation. This will involve their entire families and create a chain of awareness that develops a sense of responsibility in our children," he added.
